Best Diet for 2021
According to the rankings In the US News and World Report published on the 4th of January 2021, the Mediterranean diet was chosen as the best diet overall for the fourth year in a row. The DASH (Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension) diet and the Flexitarian diet were tied for second place this year.
It is interesting to note that the top diets have one thing in common: they are stress-reducing by eliminating processed foods and focusing on meals that include fruits, vegetables, lentils, nuts, and seeds.
To come to this conclusion, a panel of 24 experts in heart disease, diabetes nutrition, diet, food psychology, and obesity was utilized to review research that has been published over the previous year in medical journals, government reports, and other resources.
They scored each diet on various measures, such as how easy it is to follow, how likely it is to lead to weight loss, how healthy and safe it is, and how effective it is in preventing and managing chronic conditions like diabetes and heart disease.
The evidence level is relatively low, using a panel of experts, and being well short of a systematic review of the current literature.
It is interesting to note that the keto-type diets were ranked very low because they are extremely restrictive, difficult to follow and eliminate some food groups.
There have been many studies in the past that have found the Mediterranean diet effective in reducing the risk for diabetes, high cholesterol, dementia, memory loss, depression, and breast cancer. It has also been linked to a decreased risk of heart disease and improving longevity.
The Mediterranean diet focuses on plant-based cooking, focusing on fruits and vegetables, whole grains (quinoa, amaranth, millet, farro, spelt, and teff), beans, and seeds nuts, emphasizing the use of extra Virgin olive oil and regular consumption of fish (especially fatty fish). It also emphasizes minimal use of refined carbohydrates such as sugar and flour.
