What is a Mediterranean Diet?

There really isn't such a thing as "a" Mediterranean diet. The various countries bordering the Mediterranean have a variety of eating habits. Greeks eat differently from Italians, who eat differently from the French and Spanish. But it is generally accepted that the folks in countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea live longer and have lower cancer rates and cardiovascular disease than Americans. The key seems to be:

  • An active lifestyle

  • Weight control

  • A diet low in red meat, sugar and saturated fat and high in produce and nuts
